How to find the volume on a UK water bill
The number you need is the volume in cubic metres, and it is not the number printed largest. A UK water bill gives most of its space to money and a line or two to volume, usually near the opening and closing meter readings, and the volume is simply the difference between them.

The short answer

The single most common mistake is comparing bill totals in pounds between years. Two totals differ by the annual price change as well as by any change in use, and the volumes differ only by the water.
How this works in practice
Four steps, and the third is where a year gets assembled from what you actually have.
- Find the meter readings section. It is usually smaller print than the amount due, and often on the reverse or on a second page.
- Take the volume in cubic metres for the period, or work it out as the closing reading minus the opening one.
- Scale it to a year: divide by the number of days the bill covers and multiply by 365. Or, better, add up a full year of bills so no season is over-represented.
- Check whether either reading is marked as estimated. If so, the figure is a prediction rather than a measurement, and it is worth getting a real reading before drawing conclusions.

What changes the answer
Four things, and the first two mean the number is not a measurement at all.
- An estimated reading. The volume was predicted from past use, so a new leak cannot appear in it. It appears later, all at once, when a real reading catches up.
- A period that is not a clean quarter. Bills cover odd numbers of days surprisingly often, so scaling by days rather than by four matters more than it sounds.
- The sewerage volume, which on many bills is lower than the water volume because most companies bill wastewater on a share of metered water. Use the water volume.
- Which season the bill covers. A summer quarter contains garden watering and a winter one does not, which is why a full year is worth assembling.

Exact by definition
SI definition. The litre is defined as one cubic decimetre, so one cubic metre is exactly 1,000 litres.

Annual figures on this site are a daily rate multiplied by 365. Leap years are not modelled, so a leap year is understated by one day, which is 0.27 per cent.

- Where exactly is the volume?
- Near the meter readings rather than near the total. Look for two readings, an opening and a closing one, with the difference between them stated in cubic metres. That difference is what you were billed for.
- My bill covers three months. How do I get a year?
- Multiply by four if the period really is a quarter, or scale by days if it is not: volume divided by the number of days in the period, multiplied by 365. Better still, add up a full year of bills, because one quarter carries whatever season it happened to cover.
- What does an estimated reading mean?
- That nobody read the meter, and the volume was predicted from your past use rather than measured. It is marked, usually with an E. An estimate cannot show a new leak, because it is derived from the period before the leak started, and the correction arrives as a large catch-up bill when somebody finally reads the meter.
- Why does my bill show two different volumes?
- It probably has a water volume and a sewerage volume, and on many bills they differ, because most companies bill wastewater on a share of the metered water rather than all of it. For this comparison use the water volume, which is what actually passed through the meter.
- I am unmetered. Can I still use this?
- No, and not because of a limitation of the site. An unmetered bill has no volume on it at all, because nobody measured one. There is nothing to compare, and a leak does not change the bill either.
